ABOUT DR.STICKS
My name is Dustin Rothwell (DR) and my friend Doug Elliott and I have started a
business making walking sticks hence the name (Dr. Sticks).We started this adventure one year ago in winter 2021. We both like working with wood and using our hands. Sticks are plentiful in our area so we used tools that Doug had, went out and cut (we refer to it as hunting) sticks.
There are several reasons why we did this;
1) To assist those who have mobility issues and need assistance with balance while walking, including winter/icy conditions.
2) Recreational uses, hiking and outdoor explorations(uneven, rough or slopped terrain)
3) Ceremonial / decorative uses
and finally….
4) For protection in defending oneself from lions , tigers and bears (oh my) and possibly Zombies!!! (we have seen them in High River) WHAT?!?
We have made several kinds/sizes of canes, hiking, walking, decorative /ceremonial (beads , feathers carvings, burns) and also talking or blessing sticks.
We create these masterpieces in Doug’s garage/workshop and the raw material of the stick will be salvaged from bushes in the area. We forage for caragana, honey suckle, birch, diamond willow, and any other kind you can find.
We hope to market our sticks locally to those who want or need them. Perhaps for help walking or for birthday gifts.
Our prices range from $30 to $70 depending on how much time we spend on it and the decorations. We will custom make them (colour of stain, add ons, smooth, straight or bendy/twisted). We have to peel, sand, stain each one to make them perfect.
